Jezični savjetnik: Jeste li iskreni od srca ili zbog integriteta?

Novi jezični savjetnik objašnjava razliku između riječi sincerity i honesty.

Govorite li istinski?

Riječ sincerity dolazi od latinske riječi „sincerus“, a znači neokaljan, čist. Kada ste iskreni (sincere) to znači da govorite istinski, iz srca, bez pretvaranja ili licemjerja, drugim riječima, zbilja mislite ono što govorite.

Primjer: „Kada je rekao da će mi pomoći mislila sam da je iskren.“

The word sincerity comes from the Latin word “sincerus”, which means “pure” or “clean”. When you are being sincere it means that you are speaking genuinely, from your heart, without pretense or hypocrisy in other words, you really mean what you are saying.  

Example: „When he said he would help me, I thought he was sincere.“

Riječ honesty dolazi od latinske riječi „honestus“ što znači častan, pošten, a to podrazumijeva integritet i moralnost. Kada ste iskreni (honest) to znači da ne skrivate informacije i da govorite istinu. Zbog latinskog korijena pridjev „honest“ se prevodi i kao pošten, čestit, častan.

Primjer: „Na sudu svjedok polaže zakletvu da će govoriti istinu, cijelu istinu i ništa osim istine.“

The word honesty comes from the Latin word “honestus”, which means “honourable”. It refers to integrity and morality. When you are honest it means that you are not hiding information and that you are telling the truth.

Curiosity: candid camera – a world-wide known TV series which has been aired since 1960. Candid is another word for honest. In the sense of candid camera, it means that people are recorded when caught off guard and without knowing it.   

Zanimljivost: skrivena kamera – svjetski poznata TV serija koja se emitira od 1960.godine. Candid (iskren) je druga riječ za honest (iskren). U slučaju skrivene kamere, riječ candid znači da se ljudi snimaju bez njihovog znanja u neočekivanim situacijama.
